Coronavirus Research Group Information CLOSED

What is this program?

Currently, the Coronavirus is heavily impacting massive portions of the society, such as the economy. The many being affected by Coronavirus are dying around us. However, there is no cure. Scientists around the world are working 24/7 to find the root cause of the problem. The Helyx Bioinformatics Initiative is joining them. To spread STEM knowledge in an impactful way, we have decided to educate students through research of this relevant disease.

How does this work?

There are 2 portions of the program. The first is the epidemiology portion where students analyze data and trends published by reliable data sources using Python. This process is more computer science and machine learning-oriented. The next process is the sequence analysis where students learn and apply advanced biology concepts to solve the puzzle of the coronavirus.

Why are we doing this?

The Helyx Initiative is running the Coronavirus research program for several reasons. First, we were concerned by the scare created by rampant misinformation spread around the Internet, especially by teenagers online, on platforms such as TikTok and Instagram. Additionally, The Helyx Initiative has a goal of connecting the public to researchers and bridging the divide. By creating this research program, high school students are given the opportunity to not only become more informed on the coronavirus but also get hands-on research experience and gain exposure to the world of research. Through the program, they learn to conduct original computational research while working in groups with their peers.
